Colorado springs personal training: "How my dad lost 250 lbs and healed himself from Type 2 Diabetes"
Hi, my name is Ethan Boynton and I'm a Colorado Springs personal trainer, and I'd like to tell you an outrageous story that fuels my passion for personal training.
I hear a lot of people talking these days about how much of a waste of time it is to train and stay in shape. I hear it’s “too late” and, “what’s the point”, from one to many people, and it worries me. What I tell people in response to that is, “If my Dad can do it, then you officially have NO excuses.”
When I was 15 years old my Dad was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, and it wasn’t a surprise, the man was 5’10” and 450 lbs. You had to be at the dinner table early on thanksgiving when he was around.
His response to finding out he had Type 2 Diabetes was about the same as my Grandmothers: “I don’t feel any different, so why change anything?”
What my Dad failed to realize was that when my Grandmother lost her foot, one of her eyes, and went bald - all in five years - it wasn't part of the “growing old process.”
My Grandmother learned to eat right the last 3 years of her life because someone else was feeding her.
At the time, my Grandfather had recently died also. One day I went to my Mom and told her, “I just lost my Pa, and now I’m going to lose my Dad too.” And she, being the wonderful woman she is, immediately told my Father about this. I thank God to this day she did. It freaked him out and made him realize just how serious this his condition was, and it also made him realize how much of an impact his disregard for his own health impacted others around him.
So he finally came to me and asked me to help him, and that’s when the magic happened. I put him on the proper diet and exercise program, he did what I told him, and he lost more than I weigh. He now weighs 200lbs, meaning he lost 250lbs, and believe it or not, his diabetes went away!
He is off his medications! He is going to the doctors less! He can now tie his own shoes! All this because he stopped making excuses. He showed me that people chose how they live. For him, he got well because he stopped using excuses: genetics, how he was raised, eating healthy is too hard, I can’t afford to be in shape, I was fat when I was a kid, I’m content right now, or, my husband/wife loves me the way I am.
When it comes down to it, it all has to do with how important your health is to you and just how high, or low, of a quality of life you want.
My challenge to you is instead of looking at your health at the present, look at your health in the future. Think about what you would look like or how you might feel if you continue like you are right now.
If you don’t know the answer to this, then I can offer you an assessment that will give you an idea on your health. It's called a Wellness Score. It costs $99 and we will spend 30 minutes together going over your goals, hopes and dreams and how I can help you get there. Once we perform the score, go over your goals, we will workout together for a one hour. It's a great value.

At Thrive, we love listening to patient complaints about health care and their former Colorado Springs Chiropractor experience. Often times, patients have good stories, but it's the bad ones that we love to here...doesn't everybody? It helps us get a peek through the window of patients' minds, into what they really want, and how they really want to be served.
This is what patients have to say:
1. "I don't just want to be sold chiropractic visits!" Most patients love the results they get from chiropractic, but they want a bigger picture than, "Thank you. We'll see you next week." The truth is that you have to maintain your body for life - Where else are you going to live? But, there are many things you are doing that are contributing to your pain, and there are many other things besides chiropractic that can benefit your health condition. At Thrive, we've found nutrition, lifestyle changes, exercises, massage therapy, laser therapy, spinal decompression, and supplementation can benefit back pain conditions. Our solutions for patients is more than a chiropractic adjustment, and patients seem to like that.
2. "My former chiropractor had crazy hours!" We get it. Chiropractic hours seem to be all over the place and the reason is that it is often manned by one doctor. Between the admin duties and treatment hours, it is just too much to work five or six days a week. However, at Thrive, we have three doctors currently and we are hiring a fourth. This has allowed us to have easy office hours for patients. We are open 6 days a week, and closed on Sundays.
3. "Why don't chiropractors accept insurance?" Contrary to some popular belief, many chiropractors do accept insurance, and many insurance companies pay for chiropractic. However, many offices don't bill insurance because it is a total hassle. We've accepted that hassle, and we accept insurance. We have doctors in-network, and out of network. When you first come in, we will perform an insurance verification to determine your benefits and how it relates to your recommended treatment.
More complaints to come...
Today's post is from Ian Kallenbach, Thrive Health Systems co-founder, about a patient's success story after just four visits for Thrive's Colorado Springs Class IV Laser Therapy:
"One of my favorite recent stories was from a patient featured on our home page, Tony. Tony came in on his fourth visit, and told me that he had worked out for three hours that day. On top of that, he had cooked dinner for the office staff. Needless to say, I thought Tony was a very generous and kind person.
In response to his proclamation that he has worked out for three hours that day, I said, 'Great Tony. That's a long time.' I had no idea why that was a big deal, except that it is a long time to work out.
Tony's prior military experience conditioned him to train for many hours - even days - at a time. In fact, he missed it. He missed being able to move like he used to.
When people are in our clinic, I figure they have some pain or injury they want to address, but I didn't know how much it was impacting his life.
Tony told me his health story. 'Ian, before I came to see you guys, I walked with a cane, and I couldn't climb stairs. My knees were shot,' he said.
In four visits, Tony went from unable to walk without a cane and a pain level of 10 on a 10 scale, to pain levels of 2 and able to workout for three hours. Tony is a young man, and Class IV Laser gave him his life back. It worked to rehabilitate his knees and reduce his pain.
