Lupus breakthrough: How one patient got her life back

12/13/2017

lupus is an autoimmune disease characterized by joint pain, rashes, and fatigue.

Lupus is estimated to affect 1.5 million Americans, and 5 million worldwide, with 16,000 new cases each year (source).  For the majority of people, Lupus is not fatal - however, it will significantly impact quality of life.  Overall body and joint pain, rashes, and profound exhaustion are all tell-tale signs of Lupus.

Dr. Erik Arter, D.C., one of the Chiropractic Physicians at Thrive, recently conducted an interview on Mom's Everyday in which he brought a patient who had struggled with Lupus with no answers.  She is a nurse, and she was looking for a doctor-directed, non-pharmaceutical solution.

Here is her story:
We have deep empathy for people suffering from autoimmune diseases.  Many patients suffering from autoimmune issues are given medications with intense side effects, or are misdiagnosed due to poor diagnostics.  Patients can spend years trying to figure out what is wrong, and feel like their situation is hopeless.

But what does "autoimmune" even mean? Let's talk to Google:

Picture

Now notice at the bottom of the search results page, it reports "mentions" over time (essentially, how commonly a word or term is being mentioned).  You'll notice the number of mentions increases dramatically at about the 1950's, and continues up until this day.

The data is clear - there has been an explosion of autoimmune disease within the last 50 years.
Picture
Graph available here.

What is causing this autoimmune disease explosion is debatable.  What we have found to be effective in addressing autoimmune disease and immune dysfunction is Functional Medicine.

an easy way to understand functional medicine

Picture

Functional Medicine is an entirely different approach.  The goal is to not just "get you on a medication".  We believe the body can heal itself if given the chance.  Our goal is to find out what the real reason is that is preventing the patient from being healthy.

We believe pain and dysfunction is your body's "check engine" light.  It's the only way your body can tell you that something is wrong, and needs to be addressed.

The pain you feel is a symptom - a symptom is a warning.  We don't want to treat the symptom - we want to treat the problem, the real reason the "check engine" light came on in the first place.

Why?  Because this is what happens when you treat symptoms:

Our Offer To You

If you or someone you love is struggling with an autoimmune or "mystery" illness issue, and you're interested in a doctor-directed, non-pharmaceutical approach, then schedule an appointment in one of our clinics and talk to one of our Functional Medicine doctors.  For only $19 you can sit down with them, discuss your situation, and see if there is a way that Functional Medicine might help you achieve your goal.

You can schedule an appointment here - we look forward to working with you.

BLack mold exposure: how functional medicine helped this patient recover from black mold exposure naturally

mold exposure gave this patient an incredibly painful rash. what she did next changed the course of her life

Sometimes we hear and see patient stories that just blow our minds.

This is one of those stories.  And it has to do with black mold exposure.

We are so happy that Rebecca has been able to make a full recovery with an all-natural, holistic protocol that has yielded incredible results.  This type of protocol falls under the realm of Functional Medicine, which is a natural way to treat disease and dysfunction.

This is her story:

black mold symptoms and treatment

Amazing!

Symptoms of black mold exposure include:

- Rash
- Fatigue
- Brain fog
- Skin issues
- Breathing issues (difficulty breathing)
- Immune system issues
- Weight gain

Here is some feedback from the doctor:

"I had a female patient who came in 3 weeks ago with these symptoms:
red rashes and dermatitis all over body, digestive issues, brain fog, weak immune system, weight gain, and chronic fatigue.  When listening to her symptoms, I thought of Candida and repairing the gut.

She works at a major supermarket and suspected a Mold issue because she saw black mold behind some food on a wall.  She went to 3 MDs before coming here and they would put her on steriods and her symptoms would get relief for a few days and then come back again.

I recommended our comprehensive panel, food sensitivity testing, and an in depth mold test through blood.

Her labs indicated a suppressed immune system, high inflammation.  She had food sensitivities to peanut, tomato, egg yolk, and cashews. Mold test indicated high candida caused by reactions to 2 Molds: Penicillium Chrysogenum and Cladasporium Herbarium.

I started her on a protocol to address these issues.

Through her workplace mold test, they found the 2 molds she had a reaction to in a extreme amount present. I advised her to be moved to a new location so she does not breath in the toxins. It is amazing the results in just 3 weeks! She feels 80% better and has lost 14 lbs as well."

Functional Medicine Can Get Incredible Results!

If you're struggling with health challenges, make an appointment today at Thrive Health Systems and have one of our Functional Medicine doctors sit down with you for a full examination.  They will review your case, educate you on treatment options, and help you understand how Functional Medicine could be the solution you've been looking for.  Schedule your appointment today!

Spinal Stenosis Treatment in Colorado Springs: Non-Invasive Treatment for Spinal Stenosis

8/8/2017

what is spinal stenosis, and how does it work?

Spinal stenosis is a condition in which the spinal cord becomes compressed from the vertebral column narrowing. The most common type of spinal stenosis is caused by degenerative arthritis of the spine. (1) This is most commonly localized to the facet joints and ligamentum flavum, with the resultant arthritic changes in the facet joints visible on radiographic studies.

The primary cause of spinal stenosis is chronic pain, usually in the neck or low back. It has been reported that over 75% of Americans will experience back pain in their lives. Leading causes of low back pain vary from acute injuries, such as traumas, to chronic pain from a variety of reasons.

What happens when we have low back pain or stress that doesn’t go away or we have for years? The stress on the joints in the spine and muscles surrounding the spine may hypertrophy (grow) and result in narrowing the area surrounding the spinal cord.

causes of spinal stenosis

How many Americans sit at a desk or in one position more than 4 hours a day? Could the chronic, repetitive stress of our day to day lives be leading to the 250-500,000 people suffering from spinal stenosis symptoms?

CT scanning and MRI studies in patients who are asymptomatic and younger than 40 years demonstrate a 4-28% occurrence of spinal stenosis. (2)  Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) remains the leading preoperative diagnosis for adults older than 65 years who undergo spine surgery.

The pathophysiology of spinal stenosis results from chronic stress on joints over time, leading to bone formation surrounding the spinal cord. The decreased space around the spinal cord creates a narrowed area (stenosis) around the spinal cord, often times resulting in radiculopathy, muscle weakness or chronic pain.

Options for treating spinal stenosis in colorado springs

There are a wide variety of non-invasive treatment options for spinal stenosis.

Exercises are typically recommended for conservative treatment of spinal stenosis and include a series of sciatic nerve stretches, postural correction and corrective exercises.

Chiropractic adjustments for improved mobility of the spine combined with decompression tables have successfully been used to treat musculoskeletal and neurologic symptoms from spinal stenosis.

Laser light therapy can be beneficial in reducing inflammation from chronic pain as well as provide pain relief.

Other options include management of medications including NSAIDS, epidural injections and possible surgery.  Given the nature of the condition, symptoms tend to get worse over time if not treated.

how thrive can help spinal stenosis

Thrive Health Systems offers a variety of treatment options from chiropractic, functional movement training, decompression, class IV laser therapy, and even functional medicine services. Focusing on prevention and management is key.

Our doctors can provide a thorough examination to evaluate if you are a candidate for chiropractic or other services. Imaging studies used in LSS typically include standard radiography (x-rays) or MRI.

The goal of spinal imaging is to localize the site and level of disease. Results of your radiographs or MRI can help differentiate conditions for which patients require surgery and conditions for which patients can seek relief with conservative treatment.

Medically Weight Loss - How Doctor-Directed Weight Loss Is Working In Colorado Springs

4/24/2017

So, you want to lose weight, and do it in a healthy, sane way.  Great! There are many ways to lose weight, however, most either leave you hungry while in a starvation mode or wanting more. Medical weight loss is the safest, most effective way to get weight off and keep it off. Medical weight loss involves having every factor from your blood chemistry, metabolic rates, and exercise patterns to hormones and vitamin levels measured to make an individual approach to weight loss.

Here are the five reasons you should choose a medical weight loss program and abandon the regular fad diets and exercises.

1. Medical weight loss offers newer evidence than decrease calories and increase exercise.

We have all heard the narrative, “to lose weight, just decrease your calories.” This story is from a study done in 1958, where they outlined the human fat represents about 3,500 calories (1). They then go through and determine, very simplistically that losing weight only involves dropping 500 calories a day for 1 pound a week. Great in theory, but unfortunately our bodies aren’t that simple. Altering one component of the body causes the entire system to have cascade effects and can dramatically change the basal metabolic rate—the overall energy needed to run the machine that is your body—for that individual. To get a more accurate sense of what is needed to lose weight, having a thorough understanding of your blood chemistry with an overall diet plan and supplements offer an individual game plan to achieve your desired weight loss.

2.  Medical weight loss offers more diversity than just weight loss for overall health.

What if the struggle to lose weight was contributed to your thyroid and cortisol levels rather than the overall food you eat? A couple key hormones (estrogen, testosterone, insulin, DHEA, thyroid hormones and cortisol) all can increase abdominal fat (2,3,4,5). On the other side, these can also cause headaches, infertility, lack of energy, osteoporosis, anxiety and high blood pressure all the way to increased risk of depression and heart disease. Luckily, these can be measured clinically. By correcting these hormones via dietary changes or supplements, the primary result internally is a healthier and happier body ecosystem. Externally, you will see results on the scale.

3.  Medical weight loss takes individuality into effect with higher accountability.

When you are trying to lose weight, and maintain and healthy lifestyle, will power alone often isn’t enough to move the needle. A study in 2008 showed a 3.5lb more weight gain when the patient was self-directed after losing weight (6). Normal diets usually involve the quick internet search with caloric restriction or a fad idea and no actual direction. By combining your will power with a medical professional’s guidance and accountability, you will have more sustained weight loss and increase your chances of keeping your hard work in check.

4. Medical weight loss avoids plateauing results stemming from thermogenic resistance of fat loss.

Too many people go down the path of eat less and must lose weight? We have already referenced the antiquated study that demonstrated that (1), but did you know that prolonged caloric decrease can have the reverse effects that you desire? After a 6-month trial, prolonged caloric decrease caused decreased fasting insulin levels and decreased body temperature (7). These two have a direct correlation with decreasing your metabolic rate. Remember, your metabolic rate is the day to day energy needed to run your body. When metabolic rate is lower, you have created a thermogenic resistance to fat loss. The alternative is a caloric efficient diet directed around what exactly you need to sustain your metabolic rate or increase it to more efficiently continue your weight loss goals.

5. Medical weight loss prevents the “yo-yo” affects after you have worked so hard.

Wight regain after a recent weight loss is one of the most common problems when it comes to diet control (8). According to Gary Foster, PhD, after months of hard work, nearly 65% of dieters return to their pre-diet weight within only three years. One of the biggest reasons is the crash or generic diets tend to lose water weight mostly or emphasis the diet restrictions rather than the whole-body health mechanism. To keep the weight off, the best combination is a unique, diverse diet that matches your body type and blood chemistry with an exercise program centered around your goals (9).

Yes, fad diets may help you lose weight in the short term, but at what cost to your health? And long term, they’ve been proven to be ineffective.  When it comes down to weight loss, every person is unique and should have an individual approach. Medical weight loss accounts for what makes your body special while establishing accountability and avoiding mistakes that others will trip over. Medical weight loss is the most efficient way to become healthier, get the weight off, and keep it off for years to come.

Can Chiropractic really help?  how?!?

Definition of CHIROPRACTIC

1.    :  a system of therapy which holds that disease results from a lack of normal nerve function and which employs manipulation and specific adjustment of body structures (such as the spinal column)

This is according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. The human body is designed to function with ease. This is accomplished every moment of the day as long as there is no interference to the messages that are sent from the brain down the spinal cord and out the individual nerves to all of the muscles, cells, tissues and organs of the body. In most cases this interference occurs at the spinal column. When the individual vertebra in your spine become misaligned (subluxated, a term chiropractors use to describe the misalignment and subsequent nerve interference) it creates a state of dis-ease in the human body.

Now this is not something we hear every day is it? We know about disease. Many of us are intimately familiar with conditions like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. These are the top three killers in our society today. But the state of dis-ease is not a widely discussed topic. This simply means the lack of ease or harmony within the body and its functions. Cumming Chiropractors know that the human body was designed to function in a state homeostasis, which is the tendency of the body to seek and maintain a condition of balance or equilibrium within its internal environment, even when faced with external changes. A simple example of homeostasis is the body's ability to maintain an internal temperature around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, whatever the temperature outside.

Dis-ease occurs when for any reason the Innate Intelligence of the body is not able to carry out its functions to its optimal capacity, homeostasis becomes disrupted.  This would obviously occur whenever there is interference in the transmission of mental impulses from the brain, down the spinal cord and out the spinal nerves. The end organs and tissues that should be receiving this information uninterrupted are now being interfered with.  As a result, the nervous system is working less than at 100% and the function of the body decreases. There are several causes of Dis-ease in the human body. The most obvious would of course be a misalignment of a spinal vertebra interfering with the transmission of mental impulses or commands by way of the Nervous System.

While our Cumming Chiropractors take care of many people with a wide variety different complaints and ailments it is extremely common for them to hear stories of health issues being reduced or cleared up as a result of removing the interferences from their nervous systems. This is done thru a thorough examination of the spinal column and the associated injury transmitted to the nervous system. Once the interference is removed from the nerve system through proper spinal alignment homeostasis is reintroduced to that body and its functions. It is common to hear that digestion improves, there is an increase in energy, sense of smell increases, taste is restored, hearing improves, strength increases, proper posture is restored, and people breathe easier. In almost all cases these were not a part of the main reason a person sought out help initially. This is a great example of the ease and harmony that the human body was designed to function. We have seen this on many different occasions.

One instance involved a family of four. The dad had originally come into the office for neck and shoulder pain. After having his condition resolved he started his entire family under care. He had read the information he was handed on what true health and wellness was and relayed the story of many years of doctors bills because of his children's sicknesses. Through time he noticed that his children were less sick and missed less school. After one year he shared with me that his family medical expenses were less than half of the year before. Our Cumming Chiropractors have the honor of helping people every day to overcome their ailments and to increase the function of their body, improving their lives. To the patient much of this is an unexpected health bonus because they may have been going thru life with what they thought was normal or that they would just have to live with.

Whether you have a specific condition you are suffering with, you are looking to get healthier and have more energy, or you just don't feel right and have no idea why we invite you to come and meet the Cumming Chiropractors at Thrive Health Systems. They would welcome the opportunity to speak with you and offer suggestions to improve your present health concerns. We are located on Atlanta Highway in Alpharetta and our number is 770.667.0099.

Do You Know Someone With Text Neck?

1/26/2017

Do you know what text neck is? Have you ever heard of it before? Text neck is the term used to describe the neck pain and damage sustained from looking down at your cell phone, tablet, or other wireless devices too frequently and for too long. Our brains require movement from our joints, called proprioception, for optimal function. The smart phones that we carry in our pockets are having a dramatic impact on how our brains function.

Nerve input into your brain is created when you move around throughout the day. This input is so important to brain health that problems with proprioception have been linked to autism spectrum disorders.

Our Cumming Chiropractors know that a deficiency of healthy nerve input to your brain can occur a number of ways. The most common being c-section births involving a lot of pulling on the infants neck, or severe repeated falls that change the spines shape throughout childhood.

A new issue that is arising with alarming frequency is what we call “text neck.” The largest amount of proprioception in our body comes from the joints in your neck, called facet joints. When you have a healthy cervical arc in your neck you help ensure proper proprioception from your spine up into your brain. When you lose the arc in your neck due to falls, accidents, or by sitting with your head down in your phone for hours on end each day, your brain pays a price.

Of course, this posture of bending your neck to look down does not occur only when texting. For years, we've all looked down to read. The problem with texting is that it adds one more activity that causes us to look down—and people tend to do it for much longer periods. It is especially concerning because young, growing children could possibly cause permanent damage to their cervical spines that could lead to lifelong neck pain and the essential proprioception up to the brain.
Text neck most commonly causes neck pain and soreness. In addition, looking down at your cell phone too much each day can lead to:
  • Upper back pain ranging from a chronic, nagging pain to sharp, severe upper back muscle spasms.
  • Shoulder pain and tightness, possibly resulting in painful shoulder muscle spasm.
  • If a cervical nerve becomes pinched, pain and possibly neurological symptoms can radiate down your arm and into your hand.
Cumming Chiropractors know that the genius behind the chiropractic adjustment is that it helps to correct misalignment of the spinal joint as well as increasing proprioception. Every adjustment stimulates the nerve endings in your spinal facet joints to help simulate and fire off proprioception up into your brain.

Chiropractic also helps to restore the healthy arc that is supposed to be in your neck so that your brain is receiving the proper input throughout your day.

How is text neck treated?
First, prevention is the key. Here are several pieces of advice from our Cumming Chiropractors to prevent the development or advancement of text neck:
  • Hold your cell phone at eye level as much as possible. The same holds true for all screens—laptops and tablets should also be positioned so the screen is at eye level and you don't have to bend your head forward or look down to view it.
  • Take frequent breaks from your phone and laptop throughout the day. For example, set a timer or alarm that reminds you to get up and walk around every 20 to 30 minutes.
  • If you work in an office, make sure your screen is set up so that when you look at it you are looking forward, with your head positioned squarely in line with your shoulders and spine.
The bottom line is to avoid looking down with your head bent forward for extended periods throughout the day. Any prolonged period when your head is looking down is a time when you are putting excessive strain on your neck.
Next, correction of the misaligned structure is extremely important.
  • A complete examination and consultation to access the strength, integrity and alignment of the spine is the first step for correcting this condition.
  • You also need to have strong core muscles—the abdominal and lower back muscles—to support your upper body, including your neck. Your core muscles usually do not get enough exercise during normal daily activities, so you need to do specific exercises to target these muscles.
  • Strong and flexible muscles in the neck are necessary to minimize strain on your cervical spine and help support the weight of your head.
Avoidance is the best strategy, but unfortunately there are many people walking around with “text neck” type spinal issues. For a complete exam and consultation to determine if you can be helped with your neck pain and weakness please call Thrive Health Systems at 770-667-0099.  We are located at 4914 Atlanta Hwy in Alpharetta, GA.

10 Strategies to Boost Fertility Naturally

1/25/2017

Fertility is a term that is often times difficult to understand.  Many women are pregnant without any thought, and others on average may take up to 12 months to become pregnant. Our Naturopathic Doctor in Atlanta shares some ways to boost fertility naturally.

1. Minimize your exposure to toxic chemicals

Exposure to environmental toxins (in the form of industrial chemicals) both in utero and neonatally may dramatically affect adult fertility. Most chemicals used in everyday life do not go through the same checks medicines do. Consequently; poisonous chemicals end up circulating in our environment, food supply, air and water. Occasional exposure to one of these chemical is not of concern. What is of concern is accumulation of these chemicals over a long period. Come in for toxic metal testing with our Naturopathic Doctor in Atlanta today.

2. Try to drink filtered water whenever possible

Unfortunately, our waterways are constantly being polluted by industrial waste and byproducts, pharmaceutical drugs, pesticides and herbicides and commercial cleaning products. Heavy metals are the most common form of toxins, reaching our water supply through industrial waste, jet fuel exhaust residue and a variety of other sources. And increasingly pharmaceutical drugs are increasingly being detected in tap water.

3. Aim to eat an optimal fertility diet

An optimal fertility diet is about what to avoid as much as it is about what to include. A fertility diet should be as fresh and organic wherever possible. Key elements include: good quality protein sources and; good fats. Here is a suggested list of types of foods to consider:
§  Organic meat in small quantities, small deep sea fish like sardines and red snapper, organic legumes home cooked (not canned).
§  A gluten free diet consisting of brown rice, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruit in season, organic where possible.
§  Increase your consumption of good fats and avoid dangerous fats. Good fats include; monounsaturated fats in olive oil, polyunsaturated fats in oily fish and nuts and midchain fatty acids found in coconut oil.
§  For cooking use clarified butter (ghee) or coconut butter (without flavor) as they do not become unstable when heated.
§  For non heated oil requirements (salads etc) use cold pressed olive oil, flaxseed oil and nut oils.

4. Avoid trans fats
Did you know that consuming trans fats hidden in foods, such as doughnuts, biscuits, candy, chocolate, chips, pies, fries, and thousands of other foods may increase your risk of infertility by as much as 70%? Scientists from the Harvard University School of Public Health advise women wanting to get pregnant to avoid all trans fats. Trans fats are mostly listed as ‘hydrogenated fat’ or ‘hardened vegetable fat’ or simply ‘vegetable fat’.

5. Minimize animal derived estrogens

Dairy products account on average for 60-70% of estrogens consumed. Humans consume milk from cows in the second half of pregnancy when cows estrogen levels are high. We usually associate dairy and drinking milk with calcium, and never think about what else we may be consuming along with it (and dairy, by the way is not the best source of calcium). Hormones that have been found in cow’s milk include prolactin, somatostatin, melatonin, oxytocin, growth hormone, lutenizing releasing hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone, estrogens, progesterone, insulin, corticosteroids and many more. Do you think an excess consumption of all these hormones could disrupt your own hormonal balance? You bet! Consumption of milk has been linked to certain cases of male infertility.

6. Avoid the two most common allergens

The link between food intolerances and anti-sperm antibodies is now well established. Studies have found that women with multiple allergies and food intolerances were more likely to miscarry. An overactive immune system is more likely to attack its own body cells. From an immunological point of view an embryo and sperm cell are foreign bodies. But Mother Nature was clever; she programmed our immune systems to distinguish between an everyday invader and a sperm cell or embryo.
The two most widely spread food intolerances are gluten and dairy. I recommend all my patients have an IgG immunoglobulin test done to check if you are dairy and gluten intolerant. But since most people have some level of allergy to gluten and/or dairy, it’s advisable to avoid gluten and dairy altogether during the preconception and pregnancy period.

7. Have an STD check

Most people believe both they and their partner are STD free. However there are some STDs which can be asymptomatic, meaning that you may not be aware you have them, as there are no obvious symptoms. One such STD is a Chlamydia infection. In men, a Chlamydia infection can lead to sperm abnormalities including sperm antibodies. In women, it can lead to scarring, blocked tubes and miscarriage. Most STD’s are easy to treat, so it pays for both partners to have an STD check.

8. Implement stress reduction exercises into your daily wellness routine.

It is has been confirmed that stress has an enormous negative influence on our reproductive health. In addition, difficulties with trying to conceive produce as much stress as someone facing a life-threatening health problem or situation. It’s imperative to implement strategies to reduce stress on a daily basis. There are plenty of ways to do this, and include such things as regular exercise, deep breathing techniques, yoga or other slow-stretching exercises, and meditation.

9. Minimize intake of coffee and alcohol. Stop smoking immediately.

The studies and research findings of the effects of coffee on your fertility are mixed. But one study showed an alarming result. It found as little as 1 cup of coffee per day increases the risk of not conceiving by 55%. Try switching your daily caffeine with a healthy alternative like green tea. Alcohol has also been shown to be harmful to women’s eggs and men’s sperm. And although it’s been known for a long time that drinking while pregnant is a no-no, drinking before pregnancy has been largely ignored.
Smoking and recreational drugs can also reduce your odds of conception. A study tested the effects of cigarette smoking on semen quality in men and found that sperm motility (ability to propel forward) decreased in light smokers while heavy smoking produced abnormal sperm shape. Scientists have discovered that quitting smoking may increase sperm count in men who quit smoking for 5-15 months by 50% – 800% respectively.

10. Take a good quality preconception and pregnancy supplement

Regardless of whether you are eating organic produce and a healthy diet, you are unlikely to be getting all the nutrients your body needs for optimal fertility from your diet. This is why supplementation is important. Getting pregnant and growing a new human being with your own reserves, requires a surplus of nutrients and energy. In your body’s accounting terms, pregnancy is a luxury, a splurge of energy and nutrients. Opt for a prenatal vitamin with Methylated B12.

Nutritionist says, "weight loss is more than a number on a scale"

1/25/2017

We are almost done with January, if you have stuck with your health and fitness resolutions so far then WAY TO GO!! Usually a few weeks into a new program 1 of 2 things start to happen. 1. You hit a Plateau and don’t know where to go from there. 2. You become obsessed with THAT number on the scale!

As your Nutritionist in Alpharetta I am going to discuss the later, and why the number on the scale should not define your progress. Yes the scale is a great tool to use occasionally to track your goals, but that number does not determine your worth or the effort that you are putting in!

Being a Nutritionist in Alpharetta there a few factors and patterns I look for when tracking progress:

  1. Sleep Patterns- When adapting to a new Fitness and Diet regiment your sleep patterns will normally improve. Sleep plays a big role in both weight loss and your body functioning as a whole. So once your body is regulated to a new routine, your sleep patterns should improve.
  2. Digestion- Incorporating a new diet is usually a shock to the system! Especially if you go from Taco Tuesdays, and Wine not Wednesdays to following a strict meal plan, and eliminating inflammatory foods from your diet.  Your body won’t make the change overnight, but once it does you will notice such a big change in how you metabolize your food and how it affects you on daily basis!
  3. How your clothes Fit- Now this has to be my favorite! Yes the scale shows a number drop but does it make you feel and look better in that little black dress, or the tailored suit? I don’t think so! The way you feel in your clothes determines how you feel throughout the day. If you feel confident you will portray confidence!
  4. Improvement in your conditioning - If you see the  strength in your body improving, or if  you can run a longer distance, not get out of breath while chasing your kids, take that class at the gym that you were always terrified of then those are true results!

By limiting yourself to just focusing on that number you are losing track of all the hard work you have put in. No one else can see that number but you! But they can see hard work, dedication, and focus. Being your Nutritionist in Alpharetta I am here to help you hoan in on your goals and to focus on the real reason why you want to achieve them. Get past that number and focus on living a healthy life!

Hip Pain and Chiropractic

1/9/2017

Our hips perform many functions for our body; they keep us upright, allow us to bear weight, walk smoothly, run, jump, and kick. Since the hips are engaged in nearly every way we move, pain in this area can affect everyday life. While hip pain can be the result of injury or osteoarthritis, it can also be due to other health conditions. Our Cumming chiropractors can help you identify the source of your hip pain and develop a tailored treatment plan for condition.

Common Causes of Hip Pain:

Overuse Injuries
Constant use and wearing of the soft tissue lining of the hip joint can cause arthritis and inflammation. This can also place stress on the hip and cause inflammation of the muscles, tendons, and ligaments surrounding the hip. This type of pain can develop gradually overtime.

Trauma
Much more obvious than overuse injuries, fractures and dislocations of the hip or pelvis are easier to detect since they usually are result of direct trauma and can be seen on X-ray. Even if no bones actually break, the ligaments and muscles in the hip area can be strained, sprained, or bruised with direct trauma. These injuries can still cause significant pain.

Overuse Injuries
Heavy wear and tear on the cartilage surrounding the hip joint can cause arthritis and inflammation. Routine daily activities that place stress on the hip can also cause inflammation of the muscles, tendons, and ligaments surrounding the hip. This type of pain can develop gradually overtime.

Inflammation
Hip pain can come from within the hip joint itself or from the structures and ligaments surrounding the joint. The hip itself has limited space to move in its socket. If for any reason the hip or joint becomes injured it will cause inflammation in this space. This space then can become filled with fluid or blood, causing pain. There are also sacs outside of the joint called bursa, if these inflame pain usually occurs.

Osteoarthritis and Inflammatory Diseases
No matter the age of a person, if an injury to the hip bone occurs it can begin a process of degeneration. This degeneration is called osteoarthritis and it is the most common cause of hip pain. It involves a cycle of progressive cartilage loss and joint degeneration. While degeneration and changes to the bone can not be reversed it can be slowed down and prevented from getting worse.  Other inflammatory diseases can also cause hip pain like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, or inflammation of the spine.

Referred Pain and Other Sources of Hip Pain
Often what patients describe as “hip pain” may actually derive from a different part of the body. Some patients that experience pain in the lower back and hips may actually be suffering from dysfunction of the sacroiliac joints, or the joints that connect the sacrum to the iliac bones. Pain in the groin and hip can also be a result of a hernia, when the abdominal wall is torn or weakened.
One of the more common types of referred pain is sciatica, or inflammation or irritation of the sciatic nerve. This can result from conditions like disc herniation, spinal degeneration, narrowing of the spine due to osteoarthritis, or Piriformis syndrome. Irritation of the nerve root can cause pain the in low-back, buttocks, hips, as well as radiating leg pain.

How Chiropractic Can Help Hip Pain
After performing a careful physical examination and evaluating your personal history, our Cumming chiropractors can work to determine the source of your hip pain. We create a personalized treatment plan that could include chiropractic adjustments, decompression, cold laser, exercise therapy, posture advice, stretching, massage, coordination with other health practitioners, and more. Treatments will aim to reduce inflammation, relax any existing muscle spasms, strengthen weakened muscles, and improve the mobility of the joint. Depending on the cause of your hip pain, chiropractic adjustments could help.

Multiple studies have found that chiropractic adjustments are effective in relieving sciatica, a common cause of pain in the hip and lower back.  In a study comparing the efficacy of chiropractic to surgery for sciatica, 60% of chiropractic patients with severe sciatica had substantially improved symptoms that enabled them to avoid surgery. Cases studies have also suggested that chiropractic can relieve pain associated with sacroiliac joint dysfunction and Piriformis syndrome, which both frequently result in hip pain.

Some patients with hip osteoarthritis have also benefited from chiropractic care. In one study, 83% of these types of patients improved within nine visits to a chiropractor. Natural treatments of hip pain can allow patients to avoid the costs and risks of surgery and drugs.

BLack mold exposure: how functional medicine helped this patient recover from black mold exposure naturally

9/20/2017

mold exposure gave this patient an incredibly painful rash. what she did next changed the course of her life
