Prevention Vs Cure: Which Philosophy Drives Your Health Choices?

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” - Benjamin Franklin
It’s tough to cure things.
Curing is expensive, laborious, and time consuming.
Curing is very much a “reactive” mindset. It means something bad happens, and I wait until I have to do something (meaning, the results or circumstances get so bad that I’m forced to act).
This is a tough situation when it comes to health. Many times we see patients who have “kicked the can down the road” so many times that they are not even a candidate for what we do. They, unfortunately, have painted themselves into a corner that limits their options. It’s a heart-breaking scenario.
The human body is an incredible machine. It can adapt, withstand years of abuse, and heal itself, almost in a miraculous way.
But it can only take so much.
Like any organism, if abused for too long, the body will eventually “give”. And when it does, the options are limited.
We hate for our patients to be in that kind of position.
So we do our best to educate patients on the value of being PRO-ACTIVE in their health. This leads to a preventative mindset.
A preventative mindset seeks to build health habits TODAY, before problems show up.
A preventative mindset seeks to get ahead of small problems, so that they don’t progress to becoming larger problems.
A preventative mindset seeks to invest in their health TODAY, while the going is easy, versus LATER, then the problem is larger and more advanced.
The challenge is caring enough today to invest into tomorrow.
It’s no different than retirement…
Everyone knows, intellectually, that someday they will want to retire.
But not today. So why bother saving?
Same with health.
Nobody WANTS to be sick and in pain. But the cost of health are good habits that support health. Why bother if we’re not sick today?
That’s why philosophy is so important in healthcare. If we don’t address the ACTIONS and HABITS that create disease, how can ever really address the disease?
