What Is Class IV Laser Light Therapy For Pain?

Class IV Laser and Class 3(b) (or “cold” lasers) are two different types of Low Light Laser Therapy (LLLT) used to address pain and injury in a specific area of the body. These devices transmit light that creates an accelerated healing environment in a specific area of the body, and supports the reduction of inflammation and pain in that area.

How Does Class IV Laser Treatment Work?

Treatment works via process called “photobiomodulation” and is defined as a light therapy that utilizes non-ionizing light sources to elect photochemical events in the body. That process accelerates mitochondrial mechanisms that reduce pain and inflammation, and increase healing.

A treatment lasts 5-10 minutes, and consists of a laser head shined on a credit-card sized area on the body. The treatment should be painless, with the only sensation being a slight warming of the area.  The laser is moved continuously, so that the entire acute or inflamed area is addressed evenly and experiences the same benefit of treatment.  Some patients experience immediate relief, while some experience results over the next 72 hours.  In most cases, a number of treatments are best for fully solving a problem, but some cases do resolve in just 1-2 treatments.

What Kind of Doctor Uses Class IV Laser For Pain?

Class IV and Class 3(b) cold lasers are used by Chiropractors, Osteopaths, MD’s, and Physical Therapists. It may be administered by an assistant in most states, but it must be used under the guidance of a doctor.

What Can Laser Light Therapy Be Used For?
Class IV lasers are used for damaged tissues that are inflamed or experiencing pain. This includes shoulder and knee pain, spinal disk injuries, strained muscles or connective tissues.

What Does A Laser Treatment Feel Like?
The treatment feels like a slight warming of the area, similar to if you held a flashlight close to your skin. There are multiple types of “heads” for the end of the laser – one is a contact head that rolls over the skin, and the other is a non-contact head that you hold away from the skin of the affected area.

Either way, the sensation is similar; a slight warming of the area.
Is There Any Proof Class IV Laser Treatment Works?
Yes, you can read a few of the studies here, here, here, here, and here.

How Do I Know If I Should Use Class IV Laser Treatment?

We recommend you consult with a doctor familiar with the usage of Class 3(b) and Class IV Lasers to see if laser light therapy would be a viable option for you. The laser can be particularly effective for injuries that have are “nagging” in nature, meaning time hasn’t healed them.

We had a patient that had a hamstring injury for over 9 months, and massage, ART, trigger-point therapy, and Functional Movement Training all failed to completely help this injury. Eventually this patient heard about the laser, tried it, and after two treatments there was no more pain!

While this sounds like an incredible story, we hear these on a weekly basis.  There are some injuries that the Laser can address when seemingly nothing else can touch it, and many times results can be felt straight away.

Is There Anyone That Should NOT Use Class IV Laser Therapy?
Yes. Lasers work with light, and certain medications increase photosensitivity (light sensitivity). Anyone on these types of medications are not candidates for laser light therapy.

Those that are currently addressing cancer should consult their physician prior to the use of Laser Light Therapy, as they may not be candidates for treatment.

What Is The Cost Of A Laser Treatment?
The cost for a single laser treatment is generally between $50 and $200. At our clinic, we charge $55 per laser treatment. The number of treatments required can vary dramatically, depending on the nature of the injury or dysfunction. Some people can experience complete resolution in just two treatments (for say, a strained muscle) or it might require as many as 30 treatments (for say, a herniated disk, or badly damaged ligament or tendon) to completely resolve an issue. With the laser there is usually notable progress after every 1-2 treatments.
